Tom Spicer - Mandolin, Harmonica, Double Bass, Dulcimer

Why are you Passionate about Teaching Music?
I have worked with youth for over 40 years as a teacher, a mentor, a prevention specialist, and a counselor. It brings me such pleasure to see my students grow in their knowledge and love of music. There are so many benefits of playing music like working toward goals, building self confidence and improving social, math and reading skills. Music is a lifelong love of mine and I am so lucky to get to share that love with others.

How would you describe the atmosphere/energy in your teaching studio?
I believe that music education happens best in a relaxed, personal environment. I incorporate the type of music and songs that the student enjoys, which makes lessons more fun and productive supposed to be made.

What is something fun about you that you would like people to know?
I spent a semester in Guatemala while I was in graduate school, and loved travelling around central America. The people were wonderful, the history was fascinating, and the food was amazing.

What are your passions outside of teaching?
I enjoy travelling with my wife and family, working with wood, rebuilding old cars and trucks, and listening to live music.
