Brandon Miller - Drums

Why are you Passionate about Teaching Music?
Teaching is a passion of mine because it is an avenue in which I can make a positive impact on the world around me. I have always said that knowledge means very little if it is not cultivated and applied, but it means nothing if it is not taught.

What makes you unique from other teachers?
A low-energy teacher paves the way for low-energy students - and as such, a distinction between me and other instructors is the high-energy, positive environment that I create in when I'm with students. In my studio, students will always know that they are in a safe and judgment-free place of learning that is conducive to fun and progress - and those objectives (fun and progress) are achieved with a very practical teaching approach. Students deserve an instructor who is consistent, and with me, that is exactly what they'll get.

How would you describe the atmosphere/energy in your teaching studio?
In a word, when a student steps into my studio, they can expect to feel incredibly uplifted. I tremendously value my students not just for what they do, but for who they are, and who they are becoming. Particularly when dealing with younger students, teachers have a unique role in how a pupil develops, and a negative teacher - one whose moods seemingly change with the weather, can have a horrible influence on a student’s life outlook, and even in their future. I seek to be a firm foundation that students can rely on - no matter how bad of a week they've had, they can look forward to coming into Brandon's studio and being both welcomed and nurtured in an environment of positivity and encouragement.

What is something fun about you that you would like people to know?
An interesting fact about me is that I have actually written and published a book of poetry. It is not something I share very widely (since poetry, sadly, is a dying art-form), but it is something that I enjoyed writing very much. It is called "Raiding the Kitchen," and is about my belief that no matter how different we all are, there are some central desires that we all share.

What are your passions outside of teaching?
One of my many nicknames in high school was "Captain Everything", and as such, my involvement outside of music or even teaching and manifold. As I mentioned, I've written and published a book, I am a computer scientist by trade, and thoroughly enjoy playing video games in my spare time, and hanging out with family and friends.
